New Theme: Torii (Alpha Release)

After I saw C-class designers copying my previous theme, I felt compelled to come up with something new. So here is something I created in less than a day. It’s nowhere as pretty as my last layout, but I tried my best given my time constraint!

This theme is called ‘Torii’, which is the gate into Japanese shrines. The illustration is inspired by the ending song “Natsu Yuuzora” from the anime “Natsume Yuujinchou”. I drew the torii, and used a brush for the bamboos. (I forget where I got the brush from, sorry!) Oh and I decided to be cheeky this time and have the Nanyate?! written in Japanese instead.

By the way, Torii is still in alpha mode. I haven’t had the time to look through my codes and design.

Edit: I changed the footer, since I found some time to illustrate a lantern. For those who are curious, it used to be miniature version of the bamboo in the header. Please continue commenting on the layout – especially if you’ve found a bug! IE-users, I will check out the layout on IE tomorrow. Be patient with me!

In the meantime, here is Natsume Yuujinchou’s Ending for you to enjoy! Alternatively, you can find the full song on the Nanyate?! radio.

  • The layout looks nice. The colours are lovely.

My only complaint is that the header image, is actually too big. Like I would have probably made the bamboo trees shorter along with the shrine.

But aside from that, I like it! It’s real neat! Kudos to you!

  • I like the new theme too, very clean and the colors are great. Though I think the title of your blog could use a little more prominence. (just imho)

  • Iva

I like bigger headers (probably because I make them myself), so I guess each one to their own…I actually like everything apart from the .com in the footer, it looks a bit B-class compared to the A-class that is everything else.

  • Oh wow, the red of the temple gates against the darker background is very striking and eye-catching.

Not a fan however of the lavender (?) in the footer – why not bring the bamboo into the footer as well, to tie it all together?

  • I am LOVING your theme!! Hehe, feels nice to know that that’s what I’ll be seeing everywhere in Japan in 7 days!!!
I disagree with Tara, I like the length of your header… provides great details for the pics in the header. Glad you are finally back!!

  • OMG, I absolutely LOVE the new theme!! I like the header too! It isn’t a problem for me.

  • The new theme is beautiful! Love the little lantern on the bottom.. what does it say?

  • cute! I especially like the little lantern šŸ™‚

  • hey babe!! i love your new layout!! it gives me a very fresh and clean feeling!!!

  • I really love the theme, it’s peaceful and calming. The song is also very nice. I love music, all kinds. As for stealers, I honestly cannot stand people who do that, it was wrong of them to do it to you. Anyway, I’m a new domain, please stop by anytime. I know I’ll be visiting your site again.

  • Ivy

Thank you everyone for your input. I’ve taken some of your comments into consideration. šŸ™‚

@Katy: The lantern says Nanyate?!, so does the header.

@Amanda: The thingy at the bottom was actually a mini version of the bamboo on top. Anyway, I changed it to a lantern since I had time to spare. šŸ™‚

@Iva: The lantern A-class enough for you? šŸ˜›

@Bush Mackel: Actually, the branding is plastered all over the place – in Japanese. I couldn’t find a font Asian enough to match this layout. And those fortune cookie, Mr. Work fonts are just too lame. Hahaha.

@Tara: I personally think the illustration would lose its attractiveness if I shrink the header down too much. Although, I might make the green part in the header a little smaller.

  • OMG, I totally love this. I loved your last one, too. Great job!

  • Hey Ivy, sorry for not commenting for such a long time! It’s really refreshing to see a new theme up so soon! Sorry to hear that people were copying your designs (yea, it sucks that they plagiarise your work outright and don’t give a damn about saying thanks or giving credit back to the original author)… even when I work on my designs I’ll share with my readers where I’ve got the inspiration from šŸ™‚ not only to give credit but also to share information.

I love the header, it’s awesome! It looks fine to me because I’ve been used to huge headers but then it might to be as attractive to people using smaller monitors. You might want to add a jump-link (eg Jump to Content) at the header to redirect your readers to the blog contents.

I absolutely adore the minimalistic appeal of the design – it’s simple and very easy on the eyes. In addition, the typography is equally great as your posts don’t appear to be cluttery, windy or cramped. Some webpages use overwhelmingly small or huge fonts to create a dramatic but also a damning effect. Heh!

p/s: Regarding your tweet about whether to keep or not… my opinion is to keep it šŸ˜€ it’s such a lovely domain name and can be memorised pretty easily. But it’s still all up to you šŸ™‚ teehee.

p/s/s: Speaking of Torii, you just reminded me of that Japanese BBQ franchise in Singapore called Tori Q. I love their food!

  • Very creative — love the graphics! I wish I was good with graphics.

BTW, I didn’t know you had time to blog, let alone design a new theme. I’ll visit more often.
